Father's Day is a day honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 55 of the world's countries and on other days elsewhere. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers. It is a widely known celebration


Father's Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. It is also celebrated to honor and commemorate our forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities. The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held on June 13, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon at Spokane's Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909 about the newly recognized Mother's Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well.[1] She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child.[2]

Dodd was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers. Enlisting help from the Spokane Ministerial Association in 1909, she arranged for the celebration of fatherhood in Spokane. On June 19, 1910, young members of the YMCA went to church wearing roses: a red rose to honor a living father, and a white rose to honor a deceased one.[2] Dodd traveled through the city in a horse-drawn carriage, carrying gifts to shut-in[clarification needed] fathers.[2]

It took many years to make the holiday official. In spite of support from the YWCA, the YMCA, and churches, Father's Day ran the risk of disappearing from the calendar.[3] Where Mother's Day was met with enthusiasm, Father's Day was often met with laughter.[3] The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper Spokesman-Review.[3] Many people saw it as the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions.[3]

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.[4] In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.[2] US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.[5] In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents"[5] In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.[2] Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.[2][5]

Working With God’s Seasons

Proverbs 20:4 says, “If you are too lazy to plow in the right season, you will have no food at the harvest.”

In ministry it is so important to work with God’s seasons. Instead of always wishing for the next season, we should embrace the season we’re in.

Here are a few examples of how to work with the seasons:

1. If you’re a church planter, you won’t be any more of a real church when you have a real building. Enjoy the ride in portable facilities. You’re in a special season.

2. If you’re 50 years old and not naturally a cool person, you’ll look silly trying to act and dress 28. Embrace your season and be a mentor instead of a buddy to the next generation.

3. If your church is debt free and strong, don’t pretend like everything you have is for you. During this season, your greatest calling might be to fund the next generation’s vision.

4. If you had a singles ministry that worked for 9 years, but is no longer effective, celebrate the 9 years of success. Close it down and do something different. Don’t keep something on life support once its season has passed.

Because I was 28 years old when I started Life Church, I always felt like I was the young guy with everything in front of me. I’m not the young guy any more. (It happened so fast.) Now rather than just building our church, I embrace this season of lifting the next generation to do more than I’m able to do.

How can you better embrace this season?

Maybe it's time to re-evaluate what you are doing and where. Maybe a change is in the wind and you should embrace it with the knowledge that it is God's time for you to change but maybe you need to accept the place where you are at. Consider it as you seek the will of God.

How to Have Positive Relationships

Do you want to build positive relationships and ministry opportunities? Then you must desire to understand people so that this can happen. In the book “Today Matters by John C. Maxwell” there are some things listed by John that will help to get this goal accomplished and as he says, bridge the gap that exists between you and them.
1. People are insecure – give them confidence.
2. People want to feel special – sincerely compliment them.
3. People desire a better tomorrow – show them hope.
4. People need to be understood – listen to them.
5. People are selfish – speak to their needs first.
6. People get emotionally low – encourage them.
7. People want to be associated with success – help them win.
When you begin to look at the potential of people instead of their failures you are in a place or position to help them succeed and cause your relationship to be good.

Obama's New Welfare Plan

The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times today published articles about Barack Obama's plan to offer "tax cuts to 95% of working families." Both articles concluded that the Obama plan is a massive shell-game, redistributing income from one group to another group, similar to welfare. Here's why: According to various independent analyses, the Obama "tax cuts" would send government checks to millions of households that pay no federal income tax. By any rational definition, that's not a tax cut – it's welfare!

According to the Tax Foundation, under current law, there will be "47 million tax returns with zero-income tax liability in 2009… That's one-third of all tax returns and those 47 million tax returns represent 96 million individuals." The Heritage Foundation estimates that "by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS." And the Tax Policy Center found that the government payments for such "refundable tax credits" will balloon to more than $1 trillion in ten years.

In addition, the Wall Street Journal reports that because many of Obama's "tax credits" are phased out as you earn more, they become a "disincentive to working harder" for many middleclass workers who take on extra overtime or a second job. According to the Journal's analysis, "Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned."

How does Obama pay for this plan to give "tax cuts" to people who do not currently pay income taxes? He raids Social Security. The Washington Times report notes, "The Obama campaign dismisses such criticism, arguing that even if many working taxpayers owe no income taxes, they pay Social Security payroll taxes out of their earnings." So to afford government payments to folks who do not pay incomes taxes, the Obama plan will further erode the solvency of Social Security.

Campaigning in Ohio yesterday, Obama was asked about his tax plan by a plumber, who said, "Do you believe in the American dream? I'm being taxed more and more for fulfilling the American dream." Obama's answer was very revealing. He told this plumber, "It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."

"Spreading the wealth" and mandating equality of results is socialism, my friends. Government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. What government should do is create an environment where there is equal opportunity for everyone to succeed on their own merits and ability.
