How do you see church?

Here is a video of pastor Shannon O'Dell, who pastors in Bergman, Arkansas (population 407, who left a church of 3000 and took a $30,000.00 a year pay cut to start ministry in a small church of 88 and look at what the Lord has done!

This is the kind of thing that I am happy to see happening so the kingdom of God is increased and the Lord is exalted! This gospel of the kingdom must be preached in all the world for a witness and then the end shall come.

Speak the Word

Speak the Word
January 26th, 2009
When I find myself engaged in a spiritual battle, there is no more effective weapon in my arsenal than the practice of speaking the Word of God.
I’m not talking about reading the Word, studying the Word, or meditating on the Word. Granted, these are all essential components of developing a vital relationship with Christ.

But when I’m really going through a skirmish, and all hell is breaking lose in my life, I force myself to open up my mouth and verbalize the Word of God out loud.
There’s something about hearing yourself confess God’s Word out loud that breaks the power of the enemy and activates faith at a higher level.

Perhaps the particular denomination you grew up in didn’t emphasize speaking the Word of God. Mine didn’t. Rest assured though, speaking the Word isn’t a denominational thing. It’s a Biblical thing.

God commanded Joshua: “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth.”

Jesus shut Satan down by speaking God’s Word in Matthew 4.

You can silence the voice of the enemy in your own life by speaking God’s Word with authority and power.

Try this:
Identify a specific area of deficiency or desperation in your life.
Select several specific Scriptures that address your situation.
Then open your mouth and speak God’s Word repeatedly…
until what you say becomes what you see.

His Word will not return void.

From Tony Morgan

Tithing from NewSpring Media on Vimeo.

There’s a big learning in this short video clip. I hope you didn’t just listen to the words Perry used, but noticed how he communicated this important principle. In addition to explaining the “logistics” of the offering, he used these few moments to:

Share why the offering is important to what we do. (Vision)
Tie it all to a personal experience. (Story)
Link people back to what Jesus said in the Bible. (Truth)
Remind people that the offering is part of worship. (Action step)
Perry doesn’t always introduce the offering. The introduction isn’t always this long. But we do take a few moments to explain why we do an offering in every service.

This post isn’t about offerings. This is a post about communications. There is power in vision, story, truth and providing action steps for people.

One-Armed Boy

One-Armed Boy

A 10-year-old boy felt as though he had lost his identity when he lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. After six months of adjusting to his handicap, he decided to study judo despite the fact that he had but one arm.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know,” the sensei replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match.

Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. “No,” the sensei insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion. On the way home, the boy and the sensei reviewed every move in each and every match.

Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind: “Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

The boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest strength! Your greatest weakness is an opportunity for God to come in and give you the greatest strength you ever could imagine.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

What is it that you think is your greatest weakness?
Let the Lord bring His Word to pass in your life today!

After what I have been through in the last year, I can attest to the fact that "HIS
GRACE" is sufficient for us

More on How to Get the Job Done

On January 12, 1723, Jonathan Edwards made a solemn dedication of Himself to God. It was one of the defining moments of His life. And I'll share the written vow in a moment.

Few people have left the kind of legacy that Jonathan Edwards did. He is famous for his sermons, including Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, that helped spark the Great Awakening. He graduated from Yale at 13 as valedictorian. After graduating, he is said to have studied thirteen hours a day. He also served as President of Princeton.

But the thing I find most impressive is that he spent one hour every evening with his eleven children. He prioritized his family and the results speak for themselves. Of his known descendants, more than 300 have become ministers or missionaries; 120 became university professors; over 100 became lawyers; 60 became prominent authors; there are 30 judges, 14 college presidents, 3 members of congress, and 1 vice-president.

How would you like to leave that kind of legacy?

Back to January 12, 1723. Edwards gave himself to God with these words:

I made a solemn dedication of myself to God, and wrote it down; giving up myself, and all that I had to God; to be for the future, in no respect, my own; to act as one that had no right to himself, in any respect. And solemnly vowed, to take God for my whole portion and felicity; looking on nothing else, as any part of my happiness, nor acting as if it were; and his law for the constant rule of my obedience.

How to Get the Job Done!

How Much Money Do You Have, Lord?

Dr. Charles Stanley, pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, tells the story of a time when their church needed two million dollars to relocate to a larger facility. The only problem was they didn’t have the money. One day, the board members told Dr. Stanley to get a loan from the bank because the deal sounded good. However, Dr. Stanley told the group that they needed divine direction, so they all packed their gear and took off for a state park for the weekend for a time of prayer. All weekend they prayed earnestly that God would give them direction and help them resolve the problem that they were facing.
When they finally left the park, they still didn’t have any clear direction about how to purchase the building. But they were committed to waiting on God. A few days later, Dr. Stanley had a message to call a man he had never met. He lived in another state. The man said that he wanted to help Dr. Stanley’s ministry.
Immediately, Dr. Stanley called him back, and the stranger said, “I have had you and your ministry on my mind the past several days. I notice that you never ask for money on the broadcast, and I was wondering if you have any needs.”
Dr. Stanley explained the situation about the building and how they needed two million dollars to purchase it. The stranger said, “I think I can handle that.” And he gave that church two million dollars. That church had a problem; they gave their problem to Jesus; and their problem was solved.

Take the "LID" off!

A challenge for the New Year as we begin 2009. Take the "LID" off.

What is it that stands in between you and God in getting something done for the kingdom of God?
One Sunday we had a prophetess at the church speaking and she challenged the church to take the lid off at the church.
What hinders us personally to the point that we hinder the church and its overall mission and become the people that say we never did it that way before and go round the same circle that we have always gone in. After all if you always do what you have always done then you will always get what you have always gotten before.
The challenge is to take the “LID” off this year.
Lids are multifunctional. They keep things in and they keep things out of the pot etc. So as individuals and as a church we need to take the lid off. We also need to see what the lids are for us as individuals and as the church. I have a few that I will list here to help us identify the lids of our lives.
1. The lid of Limitation – with God all things are possible.
2. The lid of we can’t & we won’t – choices are up to us.
3. The lid of not changing or status quo – I like it this way.
4. The lid of religious works – legalism or works righteousness & self righteousness.
5. The lid of we never did it that way – unwilling to change – nothing new to be tried.
6. The lid of I like our “little church”.
7. The lid of our own individual comfort zones.
8. The lid of selfishness – I want it my way – I want my kingdom built & my needs met.
9. The lid of doubt and unbelief.
10. The lid of what I can or can’t do – it depends on what I have or don’t have etc.
11. The lid of I believe God can – but never I believe God will.
12. The lid of it’s the pastor’s job that’s what we pay him for. He is not a hireling.
13. The lid of prayerlessness – I don’t have time to pray.
14. The lid of unwillingness to be involved.
These are a few lids that I have identified that will hinder the work of the church and the life of individuals. So what happens when you take the lid off?
When the lid comes off several things are evident.
When the lid comes off there is:
1. Access to something more being put in.
2. Access to what’s inside and something being taken out.
3. There is an openness or even an emptiness.
4. The limitation of the lid is gone.
5. The aroma of what is inside fills the place. – a sweet smelling savor or a stench?
6. When the lid comes off then God can fill us as individuals or the church with Himself.

Take the challenge in the beginning of this New Year and see what God will do for and through you.
