Communication: Keep it Simple
Communication: Keep it Simple
Procter & Gamble Chief Executive A. G. Lafley believes that simplicity is the key to good communication. He told the U.S. News and World Report:
Repeat after me. If that sounds simplistic, Lafley is the first to admit that it is. Yet in a company where more than half the employees don't speak English as their first language, he says his Sesame Street- simple slogans, repeated over and over, keep everyone trained on what's important. Human beings "don't want to stay focused," he says. "So my job is to get them to focus their creativity around the focus; focus their productivity around the focus; focus their efficiency or effectiveness around the focus." Insecure leaders create complexity. Simple, direct language keeps people tuned in to what's important. Simple communication doesn’t come from a simple mind. It comes from tough-minded clarity of thought.
Jack Trout, a promoter of simplicity, suggests in his book The Power of Simplicity, that these famous adages wouldn’t be so famous if they had been written with a heavier hand and fancier words:
• Pulchritude possesses profundity of a merely cutaneous nature.
(Beauty is only skin deep.) Simply said.
• It is not efficacious to indoctrinate a superannuated canine with innovative maneuvers.
(You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.) Simply said.
• Visible vapors that issue from carbonaceous materials are a harbinger of imminent conflagration.
(Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.) Simply said.
• A revolving mass of lithic conglomerates does not accumulate a congery of small green bryophitic plants.
(A rolling stone gathers no moss.) Simply said.
Communicate the Gospel in simple terms and not in great theological terms that only those in the same circle know what was said.

Obama's New Welfare Plan
The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times today published articles about Barack Obama's plan to offer "tax cuts to 95% of working families." Both articles concluded that the Obama plan is a massive shell-game, redistributing income from one group to another group, similar to welfare. Here's why: According to various independent analyses, the Obama "tax cuts" would send government checks to millions of households that pay no federal income tax. By any rational definition, that's not a tax cut – it's welfare!
According to the Tax Foundation, under current law, there will be "47 million tax returns with zero-income tax liability in 2009… That's one-third of all tax returns and those 47 million tax returns represent 96 million individuals." The Heritage Foundation estimates that "by 2011, under the Obama plan, an additional 10 million filers would pay zero taxes while cashing checks from the IRS." And the Tax Policy Center found that the government payments for such "refundable tax credits" will balloon to more than $1 trillion in ten years.
In addition, the Wall Street Journal reports that because many of Obama's "tax credits" are phased out as you earn more, they become a "disincentive to working harder" for many middleclass workers who take on extra overtime or a second job. According to the Journal's analysis, "Some families with an income of $40,000 could lose up to 40 cents in vanishing credits for every additional dollar earned."
How does Obama pay for this plan to give "tax cuts" to people who do not currently pay income taxes? He raids Social Security. The Washington Times report notes, "The Obama campaign dismisses such criticism, arguing that even if many working taxpayers owe no income taxes, they pay Social Security payroll taxes out of their earnings." So to afford government payments to folks who do not pay incomes taxes, the Obama plan will further erode the solvency of Social Security.
Campaigning in Ohio yesterday, Obama was asked about his tax plan by a plumber, who said, "Do you believe in the American dream? I'm being taxed more and more for fulfilling the American dream." Obama's answer was very revealing. He told this plumber, "It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody that is behind you, that they have a chance for success too. I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."
"Spreading the wealth" and mandating equality of results is socialism, my friends. Government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. What government should do is create an environment where there is equal opportunity for everyone to succeed on their own merits and ability.

There is really only one way to be a loser!
Tuesday Morning Epistles
Kyle Rote Sr. was a consensus All-American football player at Southern Methodist University in 1950 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame sixteen years later. He was the first pick in the 1951 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, where he played with distinction for the next eleven years. His son, Kyle Jr., chose soccer over football and became one of the first well-known, American-born professional soccer players. The younger Rote once said, "There is no doubt in my mind that there are many ways to be a winner, but there is really only one way to be a loser, and that is to fail and not look beyond the failure."
I can't begin to tell you how many people I have known who have let a personal or professional failure imprint them for life—never rising above the place where they "crashed and burned." Some have allowed one failure to destroy their lives and profession. Others, on the other hand, have determined that their failure would not be fatal. (Simon Peter was one who not only survived his denial of Jesus but went on to become a leader in the New Testament Church.) Those who have followed in the tracks of Peter have recovered their integrity, have earned back their good reputation, and their future became more successful than anything they had done in the past. I applaud these folk. They redeemed their past, and with God's help they re-directed their failure to project them forward. And God has blessed them.
This week's "Tuesday Morning" is entitled "Failing Forward." It is the title of a book written by Dr. John Maxwell. Continue reading whenever you are ready. Then—please do this—forward this message to a friend who is burdened down with guilt and pain over a failed past. This essay is not a sermon. It is a way through the wilderness. I am praying now that someone you know will be encouraged and will re-direct their life to follow the plan that God has had in mind for them all along.
